WD Gann’s Geometric Trading Secrets: The Power of Circles, Squares, and Triangles

Many people (traders) know only Mr. Gann’s famous trading methods, including the Gann Angles, the Square of Nine, Gann Wheels, and the Gann Box.

But there’s more to his strategies than meets the eye—a wealth of trading knowledge lies under the surface.

WD Gann’s Geometric Secrets: Understanding the Market’s Hidden Patterns

WD Gann’s techniques differed from others because he didn’t view the market as linear, meaning he didn’t see price movements randomly occurring.

Instead, he saw it as a dynamic combination of linked geometric shapes, such as circles, squares, and triangles, which are the foundation of his geometric trading strategies.

Gann likely applied ancient geometric principles to market forecasting, demonstrating the importance and role of the laws of nature, such as proportion, in trading.

His use of geometric shapes reflects his belief in the inherent order of the markets. This insight is crucial for understanding WD Gann’s market forecasting system.

So, let’s take a closer look at the structure of Circle, Square, and Triangle.

Understanding Circle, Square, and Triangle

Geometric shapes help us decode market movements. We can better understand future price movements by analysing trends using geometric shapes.

It may seem strange at first, but behind the chaos of numbers lies a harmonious structure, and this is where WD Gann’s techniques excel.

Circles help identify repeating patterns over time, making them an essential part of geometric trading strategies. WD Gann used circles to identify market cycles and time shifts.

Squares, however, highlight balance areas, often indicating a potential trend reversal. Squares are pivotal to understanding Gann Angles, which rely on symmetry and proportion. Utilising squares in market forecasting allows for anticipating crucial price points.

Triangles offer valuable clues about the trend a market is likely to follow. This shape reflects Gann’s ability to merge simplicity with precision—a hallmark of his geometric trading strategies.

However, we can combine the Circle, Square, and Triangle into a Single Unit through mathematics. That’s what Gann did through the Principle of Proportion.

Geometry Theory of WD Gann

The Principle of Proportion in WD Gann Techniques

One of the most remarkable aspects of WD Gann’s techniques is his application of the principle of proportion.

For instance, dividing a circle (360 degrees) into halves, thirds, quarters, or eighths yields critical insights for market forecasting. When aligned with time and price data, these divisions reveal hidden market opportunities.

Dividing a Circle (360-degree) into Halves (1/2) results in 180 degrees.

Dividing it into Thirds (1/3) gives 120 degrees.

Similarly, dividing it into Quarters (1/4) yields 90 degrees, while dividing it into Eight (1/8) gives us 45 degrees for each section.

Let me explain the correlation between a Circle, a Square, and a Triangle.

A Square consists of ‘Four‘ equal sides 90 degrees each, which makes it balanced.

Using a numerical representation, we see that the Triangle consists of ‘Three120 degrees each.

And as you know, a complete Circle consists of 360 degrees.

So, if we see the 90, 120 and 360 degrees in a Mathematical form, combine the Circle, Square, and Triangle into a Single Unit.

Gann used proportions in more than just circles. He combined circles, squares, and triangles into one system. That shows how he blended geometric trading strategies into his market analysis.

Geometry = Graphical Precision

Another significant element of WD Gann techniques is their graphical representation.

Gann plotted ‘Angles’ Vertically, Horizontally, and Diagonally, using geometric shapes such as circles, squares, and triangles.

Here’s an Important comment from WD Gann’s Commodity Master course regarding the Circle, Square, and Triangle.

These Gann Angles remain one of the most talked-about aspects of his work. However, they require precise scaling—a critical factor often overlooked by modern software tools.

Scaling maintains the proper balance between price and time.

Without it, even the most advanced charting software cannot replicate the precision of Gann’s geometric trading strategies. Proper scaling transforms basic geometric shapes into powerful tools for market forecasting.

Common Challenges in Applying WD Gann Techniques

Many traders find it difficult to use WD Gann’s techniques effectively, even though they are powerful. Some people prefer Gann’s Graphical Methods and Work, while others find them frustrating.

The Graphical Methods of Gann are famous because trading software companies add fancy overlay features to their software to entice customers in the name of Gann.

However, software companies and their users often forget that Gann’s graphical work requires proper scaling—a balance between price and time factors. Without scaling, these overlays do not yield results.

That’s why Gann’s Graphic work can be frustrating. It’s difficult to determine the Correct Scaling of Price and time factor on charting websites or charting software(s), regardless of their cost.

Even if you invest in expensive charting software, it may not be helpful unless you can properly Scale your charts. So, think TWICE before spending your hard-earned money on expensive software(s).

Gann used a Geometric sequence of numbers to construct tables such as the Square of 9, 12, and 52. However, this still requires scaling, but of a different nature.

The main questions for users of these tables are when, where, and for what purpose they should be utilized.

Hint: I believe Gann used those tables Primarily for Long-term trading and investment objectives rather than short-term ones.

Using the Gann Geometric methods without Scaling requires a core understanding of the circle, square, and triangle.

Summary: The Key to Mastering WD Gann Techniques

You shouldn’t overlook the Geometric work of WD Gann if you want to decode and understand his trading methods since the Geometric work of Gann is highly important.

In short, to understand WD Gann’s techniques, focus on mastering his geometric trading strategies.

Pay close attention to the relationship between circles, squares, and triangles in market forecasting. These shapes are not theoretical concepts but practical tools for understanding and predicting market behaviour.

Gann’s work reveals the importance of geometric shapes in trading—from Gann Angles to the Squares and much more. His methods prove that market forecasting is as much about natural order as it is about technical analysis.

The only geometric figures Gann used in his trading were the circle, square, and triangle. Therefore, it’s essential to have a deep understanding of all three.
